Career Timeline
Brady's story is often told as an underdog tale, and the facts back that up. Here are the moments most likely to appear in an NFL quiz.
A baseball detour that never happened
The Montreal Expos selected Brady, a left-handed-hitting catcher, in the 18th round of the MLB Draft. He chose to play football at Michigan instead.
Pick No. 199
After sharing the Michigan job for much of his college career, Brady fell to the sixth round. Six quarterbacks were drafted ahead of him, a group fans later nicknamed “the Brady 6.”
The Bledsoe injury changes history
When starter Drew Bledsoe suffered a serious chest injury in Week 2, Brady took over. He finished the season by upsetting the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.
Perfect regular season
Brady threw a then-record 50 touchdown passes as New England went 16–0, before falling to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
Torn ACL
A knee injury in the opening game ended his season, the only year of his prime he missed almost entirely.
First unanimous MVP
Brady received every first-place vote for league MVP, the first player in NFL history to do so.
The 28–3 comeback
In Super Bowl LI (played in February 2017), the Patriots erased a 25-point deficit against Atlanta and won the first overtime Super Bowl.
A new home in Tampa
Brady signed with the Buccaneers and won Super Bowl LV that season, making Tampa Bay the first team to win a Super Bowl in its home stadium.
Retirement, for good
After a brief retirement announcement in February 2022 that he reversed about six weeks later, Brady retired permanently on February 1, 2023, at age 45.
Booth, banner and boardroom
The Patriots retired his No. 12 in June, Brady debuted as Fox's lead analyst in September, and NFL owners approved his minority stake in the Raiders in October.
The Seven Rings
No player in NFL history has more Super Bowl titles than Brady, and no franchise does either. The Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers each have six. Questions about specific opponents and scores are quiz favorites, so this table is worth a second look.
| # | Super Bowl | Season | Team | Opponent & Score | Brady MVP? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | XXXVI | 2001 | Patriots | Rams, 20–17 | Yes |
| 2 | XXXVIII | 2003 | Patriots | Panthers, 32–29 | Yes |
| 3 | XXXIX | 2004 | Patriots | Eagles, 24–21 | No (Deion Branch) |
| 4 | XLIX | 2014 | Patriots | Seahawks, 28–24 | Yes |
| 5 | LI | 2016 | Patriots | Falcons, 34–28 (OT) | Yes |
| 6 | LIII | 2018 | Patriots | Rams, 13–3 | No (Julian Edelman) |
| 7 | LV | 2020 | Buccaneers | Chiefs, 31–9 | Yes |
The three that got away
Brady also lost three Super Bowls: XLII (17–14) and XLVI (21–17), both to the New York Giants, and LII (41–33) to the Philadelphia Eagles. His 10 total appearances remain the most by any player.
Records Still Standing
Records fall all the time in a passing-friendly league, but several of Brady's marks look safe for years. These are the numbers quiz writers love most.
Career passing yards in the regular season, the NFL record.
Career touchdown passes in the regular season, also the league record.
Regular-season wins as a starting quarterback, the most ever.
Playoff wins, more than many franchises have in their entire history.
Super Bowl MVP awards; no other player has more than three.
His age at Super Bowl LV, making him the oldest Super Bowl MVP.
Late-career bonus fact: in 2021, at 44, Brady led the entire league with 5,316 passing yards and 43 touchdown passes, numbers most quarterbacks never reach at any age.
Brady in 2026: Booth and Front Office
Brady turned 49 in August 2026 and remains one of the most visible people in football, just not on the field. He is now in his third season as Fox's lead NFL game analyst under a 10-year contract widely reported at $375 million. Fox Sports leadership has said publicly that it sees him staying for the long term, and Brady has said he intends to honor the full deal.
At the same time, he is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. Because of that stake, the NFL limits some of his access to other teams' practices and production meetings. When the Raiders fired Pete Carroll in January 2026, owner Mark Davis said general manager John Spytek, Brady's former Michigan teammate, would run football operations in close collaboration with Brady, including the head-coaching search that led to Klint Kubiak's hiring.
One more date to remember: under the Pro Football Hall of Fame's five-season waiting rule, Brady first becomes eligible with the Class of 2028. Almost no one expects him to wait past his first ballot.
How to Ace Sports Trivia
Sports quizzes look like pure memory tests, but strong players use a few habits that work for any athlete, not just Brady.
The Two-Minute Drill for Trivia
- Anchor on eras, not years. Remember Brady's career in four blocks: the early dynasty (2001–2004), the record years (2007–2010), the late dynasty (2014–2018) and Tampa (2020–2022). Most dates fall into place once the era is clear.
- Watch the season-versus-game trap. Super Bowls are played in February, so the 2016 season's title game happened in 2017. Quiz writers use this gap to trip people up.
- Separate regular-season and playoff stats. Record figures like 649 touchdowns usually refer to the regular season only. Including playoffs, the totals are higher.
- Eliminate before you guess. If two options belong to the wrong decade, you have turned a 25% guess into a coin flip.
- Learn the story, not just the number. “Pick 199” is easier to recall when you remember six quarterbacks were taken first.
