Pre-Match Talk

Every sport has its giants, but rugby legends tend to be remembered for single moments as much as long careers: a drop goal in extra time, a jersey worn by a president, a try that began under your own posts.

This legends of rugby quiz gathers 30 of those stories into one match. You will meet pioneers from the amateur era, British & Irish Lions captains, World Cup heroes and modern stars of the women's game and sevens. The quiz focuses on rugby union and was fact-checked against official governing-body and tournament sources.

It suits hardcore fans, newcomers who caught the bug at the last World Cup, and teachers looking for a lively way to bring sports history into class. Every answer comes with a short explanation, so you will come away knowing more than when you kicked off.

What Makes a Rugby Legend?

Look across the 30 questions and a pattern appears. The players remembered longest tend to share a handful of qualities that go beyond talent.

01

Big-moment nerve

Wilkinson's drop goal and Blanco's late try show that legends are often defined by what they do when the pressure is highest.

02

Changing the game

Lomu redefined what a wing could be, and McCaw changed breakdown play. True greats leave the sport playing differently.

03

Leadership that lasts

McBride, Johnson, McCaw and Kolisi led teams through hostile tours and World Cup finals, earning loyalty as well as results.

04

Meaning beyond sport

Mandela in Pienaar's jersey and Kolisi's captaincy carried messages about unity that reached far past the stadium.

05

Opening new doors

Alphonsi, Serevi and Dupont helped grow women's rugby and sevens, bringing the sport to new audiences around the world.

Quiz tip: Many people mix up the British & Irish Lions with the Barbarians. The Lions are a touring Test team picked from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The Barbarians are an invitational club whose players can come from any nation.
